Traditional West Country log basket made from local Somerset golden buff , white and black willow, hand crafted in Wiltshire from locally sourced willow . Sturdy and well made using traditional English basket making methods . The base is made in the English ‘underfoot’ method of tying in the slath ( Old English for base) where you use your feet to hold the sticks in place whilst weaving with your hands - a bit of heritage craftsmanship !
English basket making is the main theme running through this basket :
The 12 “ diameter base ( SLATH) is made using your feet to hold the thickest bottom sticks then tying in the slath with a pairing weave from 6 and 7ft rods.
Staking up using stout 7ft rods from the uprights then the top border .
The side weave is a three rod slew from 6ft buff and brown willow this makes for a strongly constructed and long lasting basket .
Bordering off is finished by kinking down a ‘for behind two’ rod border.
Two cranked willow handles on opposite sides.
Result = A sturdy and well made Basket using traditional English basket making methods .
These were traditionally used in agriculture for spud picking and general work as they are strongly constructed and made to last , we use one as a laundry basket and has been in use since 1985!
Size 12” diameter base x 17”diameter top x 16” high approx.
I have been making these since 1985 please check on my other baskets and commissions welcome
